Episode 4: Becker on Mandela

In the summer months of 2018, a group of students from the Institute of African Studies of University of Cologne visited the University of Fort Hare at Alice, South Africa. They went there in order to translate the German files of the Liberation Archive – documents that stemmed from the ANC’s exile activities during the struggle – into English. At Fort Hare University, there are no linguists specializing in German, and so it made sense to produce translations to make these valuable documents more accessible. Jana Becker spent some of her time talking to fellow students and asked them about what Nelson Mandela meant to them today. This podcast is what she brought back.
